Graceland University Students will have the opportunity to study abroad in England in May 2016. Studying abroad can be one of the most enriching, interesting and educationally stimulating experiences of a student’s entire life. Such an opportunity can offer both personal and professional growth and can help students develop skills and gain experiences not available in a classroom. Graceland courses in England will take place May 2 through 23, 2016, and offer a variety of course topics to choose from.
Devised Theatre Abroad Students will spend several days exploring theatrical production in London and then move to the rural English countryside to devise and present an original theatrical piece. Taught by Gary Heisserer.
Examining The American Identity Abroad The course will take a critical look at contemporary American national identity, as well as how that identity is performed and perceived in international contexts. Taught by Raquel Moreira.
Travel and Nature Writing While traveling abroad, students will engage with nature and then reflect on those experiences, shaping them into well-formed creative works in a variety of genres. Taught by Isaac Pressnell
The Purpose and Power of Education in England A comparative study of the American and English educational systems. Students will conduct a study including a series of interviews and observations with English stakeholders for the creation of a documentary video. Taught by Dennis McElroy.
Traitors to the Crown: The British Empire and the War of American Independence In the U.S., the revolutionaries who fought for independence have long been considered patriots, but to King and Parliament they were traitorous rebels. This course will look at the War of American Independence from the British perspective and explain just why those greedy Americans needed to comply with imperial law and pay their fair share. Taught by John Franklin.
Interested students can attend an informational meeting, Thursday, Nov. 5, in Carol Hall, Shaw Center on the Graceland University Lamoni campus.
